2017 Shadle Fellowship - Laurel Yohe

The Albert R. and Alma Shadle Fellowship is awarded to a graduate student in recognition of current accomplishments and future potential in Mammalogy. This year the award is $4,727. The 2017 recipient of the Albert R. and Alma Shadle award is Laurel Yohe from Stony Brook University.

Ms. Yohe has published her work in journals such as Biology Letters and Evolution, and has received multiple awards and fellowships, including a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, a NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant, and a Fulbright Fellowship. She has presented at multiple national and international meetings, including the 2016 Anna M. Jackson Award presentation to the American Society of Mammalogists.

Ms. Yohe’s research focuses on the molecular evolution of chemosensation in Neotropical bats, and her dissertation research has involved field work with bats in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Peru. She plans to use support from the Shadle Fellowship to fund an additional field expedition to collect samples from phyllostomid bats to characterize the mechanisms of chemosensory-mediated behavior in bats.
