Grants

ASM is deeply committed to training future generations of mammalogists. This includes offering multiple sources of financial support to students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career investigators engaged in research on mammals. It also includes travel funds to promote student presentations at the Society’s annual meeting. Below is a list of funding opportunities available to ASM members at these stages of their careers. More information regarding each award can be obtained by clicking on the name of the award.

Graduate student research awards:

These awards provide funding for student research projects. Applications for most of the awards are due 1 March at 11:59pm (EST), and the African Graduate Student Research Fund Award is 15 April at 11:59 (EST); all applications should be submitted online here

For all awards, more information regarding eligibility requirements and application procedures are available by clicking on the name for each fund. Students may apply for two research awards in a given year, but may receive only one research award (GIAR, LAFRA, Cameron, Kaufman, or Patton). Students who receive a research award are eligible to receive a second award in subsequent years (hence, up to two awards in combination; e.g., 1 GIAR + 1 Patton; 2 GIARs, etc.); however, pending a decision by the Board, the Cameron and Kaufman awards are excluded from the 2-award limit this year (2020).

Graduate student fellowships:

These awards recognize students with sustained records of outstanding research productivity as well as substantial engagement in ASM. As a result, although there is no formal requirement regarding the academic stage of applicants, these fellowships are typically given to students who are nearing the completion of their graduate degrees. However, recipients must be enrolled as a graduate student during the forthcoming fall semester to be eligible for these awards. Applications for these fellowships are due 1 May at 11:59pm (EST) and should be submitted online here. More detailed information regarding each fellowship is available by clicking on the name of the award.

Additional graduate student opportunities:

These awards support several different aspects of graduate training, including presentation of research results at ASM’s annual meeting and exposure to the interface between biological science and public policy. Details regarding these awards, including eligibility requirements and application procedures, are available by clicking on the name of each funding opportunities.

Undergraduate funding opportunities:

Interest in mammalogy often begins before graduate school. Many burgeoning mammalogists engage in high quality research during their undergraduate careers. Accordingly, ASM is pleased to offer the following funding opportunity specifically for undergraduates:
