Unnamed Resolution concerning Barren-Ground Caribou in Canada

WHEREAS, the barren-ground caribou is an important natural resource of northern Canada; and

WHEREAS, the continued well-being of many Eskimo and Indian bands in remote areas is dependent upon continuing supplies of caribou; and

WHEREAS, there has been a serious decline in the caribou population; and

WHEREAS, the Canadian Department of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources has commenced an intensive research program to study caribou populations;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Society of Mammalogists commends the Minister of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources for recognizing the serious situation and for initiating the cooperative program that may lead to a better management of its caribou herds.
