Re-authorization and Funding for the Endangered Species Act

WHEREAS, the 1973 Endangered Species Act was a milestone in conservation because of its provisions for protection of such species, funding for research and conservation, and protection of critical habitats; and

WHEREAS, the Act is currently operating only under a continuing resolution of Congress; and

WHEREAS, proposed re-authorization may eliminate funding for Section 6, cooperative programs with the states;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the American Society of Mammalogists supports formal re-authorization of the Endangered Species Act and encourages inclusion of provision for adequate funding for Section 6 and other crucial components.
