Resolution Supporting Conservation Efforts in Amazonia, Brazil

WHEREAS, the diverse biota, including many rare and endangered species of mammals, of the Amazonian basin is threatened by exploitation and other causes of habitat changes; and

WHEREAS, Maria Tereza Jorge Padua, Directora da Divisao de Protecao da Natureza, IBDF, Brazil, has been one of the key persons in the program to establish national parks in the State of Amazonia;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Society of Mammalogists affirm their concern for the protection and conservation of the biota of the Amazonian rainforest; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Society congratulate and encourage Ms. Jorge Padua and her colleagues in their efforts to establish national parks in the State of Amazonia.
