Equal Opportunity in the American Society of Mammalogists

WHEREAS, the American Society of Mammalogists has a membership diverse in gender, race, ethnic origin, religion, age, physical ability, marital status, sexual orientation, and educational background, among other aspects; and

WHEREAS, mammalogists value the diversity of the Society's membership no less than they value the diversity of the natural world; and

WHEREAS, any form of harassment or discrimination, whether blatant or subtle, is unacceptable in any professional society;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that The American Society of Mammalogists, meeting at Western Washington University, Bellingham, Washington, 19-23 June 1993, deplores any form of harassment or discrimination, and actively supports, promotes, and encourages the elimination of all actions and behaviors that create or maintain negative stereotypes, and encourages full and equitable participation of all individuals interested in the study of mammalogy; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the membership expects the Board of Directors to take whatever steps are needed to guarantee that the Society is open to and welcomes all individuals at all levels of participation and governance of the Society.
