Of Concern Regarding Decline of Federal Funding for Basic Science

WHEREAS, the decline of funding by the United States Government for basic research is drastically reducing the flow of new fundamental information in the sciences of ecology and systematics;

WHEREAS, mammalogists have provided the basic information necessary for many of the significant advances in the biological and medical sciences; and

WHEREAS, The American Society of Mammalogists is the largest organization of professional mammalogists in the world;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the American Society of Mammalogists add its voice to that of other scientific organizations in calling attention to this serious state of affairs that is affecting the progress of science now and will for years to come.
