Tenure Track Faculty Position - Indiana State University

The Department of Biology at Indiana State University invites applications for a tenure track position focused on the conservation and biology of bats. This position is available at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in biology or related area, and demonstrated research expertise in bat biology and conservation. Postdoctoral experience or equivalent is desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential to assume after one to two years the position of Director of ISU's Center for North American Bat Research and Conservation (http://www.indstate.edu/biology/centers/bat.htm). The Director will maintain the Center’s current research and monitoring projects, maintain and expand its extramural funding base, and develop new research and outreach initiatives. The successful candidate will also direct graduate students in the Department's doctoral program, as well as participate in graduate and undergraduate instruction. Many opportunities exist for collaborative research within the Department.

Field Assistants - National Bison Range, Montana

We are looking for highly motivated assistants to help with an on-going study of the National Bison Range, Montana, pronghorn population. The study focuses on inbreeding avoidance and inbreeding depression, sexual selection, and the adaptive value and mechanism of sex ratio bias in this small, geographically-closed population.

We need 2-3 assistants to capture pronghorn fawns mid-May to mid-June 2010. We need 1 assistant to stay through summer or fall to conduct dominance hierarchy observations, fecal collection for parasite and hormone analysis, and photography of fawns for growth rate analysis. We also will need 3-4 assistants to observe the rut in September 2010.

Requirements: 1) You are not color blind, as it is necessary to identify individual pronghorn based on color-coded ear tags. 2) You are willing and able to work long, hard days without much time off. 3) You are willing and able to hike long-distances. 4) No whiners!

Housing is provided in a nearby bunkhouse. Fawning and rut assistants receive ~$350 total stipend, and the summer assistant will be paid ~$100/week.

Internships Available - Ocean Park, Hong Kong

Full-time unpaid internships are currently being offered by the Acoustic Research Laboratory, Tropical Marine Science Institute of the National University of Singapore in collaboration with Ocean Park Hong Kong. The ARL conducts studies on the cognitive and sensory capabilities of bottlenose dolphins living at Ocean Park with a focus on echolocation and underwater acoustics.

Interns receive intensive hands-on experience by participating in all aspects of the ongoing research and laboratory activities, including assistance in the daily research sessions with the dolphins, data processing and analysis, and also assisting with projects administrative and maintenance requirements.

Interns should have at least two years of university experience. Individuals from all types of academic disciplines are welcome to apply. Selection is competitive and is based on the applicant’s statement of interest, prior experience, academic record, and letters of reference.

Internship periods last for 5-6 months and interns are continuously accepted. Visa arrangements will need to be made once interns are accepted. There is no charge for the internship. Interns are responsible for their own room and board.

Educator - Kansas Wetlands Education Center, Fort Hays State University

Full-time 12 month, nontenure track educator with specialization in environmental education, ornithology, ecology, conservation biology, wildlife management, or other related area of expertise. Required qualifications: an earned bachelor's degree in in an education discipline, and/or a biological discipline that relates to wetlands.
