M.S. Assistantship: Large Herbivore Ecology
A highly motivated and talented MS
student is needed to conduct a study on habitat heterogeneity and the ecology of
blue
wildebeest in Kruger National Park, South Africa. The student
will enroll in the M.S. program in the Department of Biological and
Environmental Science at Texas A&M University, Commerce begining in
January 2009 semester and
conduct field work in 2009-2010. Specific research focus may include, but is
not limited to the influence of nutrient hotspots, key resource areas, refuge
habitats and
surface water on the distribution, movement, and habitat use of
migratory and sedentary wildebeest populations in Kruger National Park. Student
may also perform some duties as a
teaching assistant
after
completion of field work.
Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife, Ecology, or a related field, a GPA exceeding 3.0, and GRE scores available. Duties:

Duties:
Serves as a member or the Refuge Leadership Team at the National Bison Range.
Plans, organizes, collects, and analyzes biological data and prepares reports to achieve management objectives pertaining to wildlife populations, lands and water management.
Recommends population and habitat management practices based on proven practices, field observations and analysis of data.
Oversees data management and analyses using GPS and GIS technology.

2008 Wildlife Refuge Internships Available - Visitor Services/Biology internships
Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge in South Texas; Mid August – Mid November 2008 Or Mid August 2008 -- Mid February 2009
(Starting dates are flexible, but preference will be given to those available in August. Internships are for 3 or 6 months.)
Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is seeking two intern positions for assistance with the biological and visitor services programs. Duties include but are not limited to: developing and presenting interpretive and educational materials, programs and tours; assisting with biological surveys and research such as waterfowl counts, wetland restoration and ocelot research; providing information to Refuge visitors; selling Refuge passes and bookstore items; maintaining Refuge trails, facilities and grounds, assisting with special events, outreach, and environmental education; entering data and/or creating documents and other materials by using Word, Excel or other computer software and providing positive outreach, information, and assistance to the public.
Experience preferred but not required. Must be able to lift over 50 lbs, work in hot/humid conditions, and operate four wheel drive vehicle. You must have your own dependable vehicle and valid driver’s license.
Day conditions can involve high temperatures (90-100°F), humidity, and intense sunlight in remote areas as well as thorns, chiggers, and ticks. Interns will serve full time with 2 days off per week. Work days may exceed 8 hours and may include weekends, holidays, and nights.
Interns will receive a stipend of $30/day in addition to free housing, utilities (water, electricity, gas, sewage) and laundry facilities. Housing will be located at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, just 18 miles from South Padre Island and 45 minutes from Mexico, and will include shared sleeping quarters with no more than 2 persons per room, communal kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities. No pets are allowed.
