Honoraria and Travel Awards

Each year the American Society of Mammalogists (ASM, http://www.mammalsociety.org/) recognizes the research accomplishments of its graduate and undergraduate students with several prestigious honoraria. These awards include generous stipends to offset costs to awardees of attending the Annual Meeting in June to present their research results in the meeting’s opening Plenary Session. ASM also offers Travel Awards to students and early career professionals to help with expenses related to attending the Annual Meeting. We have a new award available this year, the Care Giver Travel Award, to help offset costs of dependent care for a member presenting at the meeting.

Honoraria

In 2020 the Society will award up to four graduate student honoraria ($2000 each) and up to two undergraduate honoraria ($1200 each). Graduate honoraria are awarded to both doctoral and master’s students. Information on the awards, eligibility, and how to apply can be found on the ASM Honoraria and Travel Awards Committee webpage (http://www.mammalsociety.org/committees/honoraria-and-travel-awards). Applications will be accepted from 15 January to 15 February 2020, with awards announced in early March. Application materials should reflect the research that the student will present in their presentation at the annual meeting. Letters of recommendation must address whether the student is prepared to present their research in the Plenary Session and the student’s role in designing and conducting the research.

Travel Awards

Students and early career professionals (within 5 years of terminal degree) interested in applying for a travel award to attend the 2020 meeting in Boulder, CO, will be able to do so by submitting an abstract for consideration to a submission portal using the following link: https://purdue.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_d1pBfZ0KXRe3X8x The application process changed last year allowing students to apply for a travel award without first having to register for the meeting. Student travel awards in 2020 are $400 each and early career professional awards are $700. Abstracts must be submitted to the Travel Award website by 11:59PM on 1 March 2020 to be considered for one of the travel awards, and no late submissions will be accepted. Abstracts submitted for consideration for a Travel Award must follow the formatting requirements for the conference found on the conference website (http://www.mammalmeetings.org/abstracts/) with the exception to exclude names and affiliations on the Word doc you upload – we use a double-blind process for reviewing Travel Awards. Please be aware that you will also need to submit your full abstract (with author names and affiliations) and register for the meetings on the meeting website: http://www.mammalmeetings.org/

This year we are offering a new award, the Care Giver Travel Award. The ASM Care Giver Travel Award is intended to provide financial support ($700) for active ASM members whose responsibilities for care of dependents would limit their ability to attend and present at the Annual Meeting in Boulder, CO, 5-9 June 2020. Receiving this award does not preclude current ASM members from applying to and receiving additional travel support from ASM. Funds from this award must be used to support dependent care rather than general conference attendance costs, like registration or travel, for the applicant. Examples of approved uses for these funds include expenses related to childcare or eldercare either at home or at the conference, hiring a temporary care giver, and travel/host costs associated with bringing your dependent, a care giver, or a helper to the conference. Applications will be evaluated based on need, past conference attendance, engagement in ASM, and the submitted abstract.

Applications for the Care Giver Travel Award are accepted through an online portal specific to these awards: https://purdue.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bpILO1qoZSL4cCN.  Complete applications must be submitted before 11:59 PM EST 1 March 2020 to be considered for this award. No late applications will be accepted. Applicants also will need to submit registration along with their abstract to the conference registration site.

Only current members of ASM are eligible for the honoraria and the travel awards.
